Motion Imaging Workflow….

…managing color reproduction from the set to the screen

Le Groupe Numérique is organizing a one-day event with Mr Charles Poynton to discuss issues concerning reliable color reproduction throughout the production process.

Whatever the type of display used in mastering or approval, achieving accurate color reproduction is becoming a major challenge with the variety of technologies employed in digital cinematography.

New single-sensor cameras such as the ARRI D-21, the RED ONE, the SI-2K, etc. rely on Bayer pattern technology. How are those images viewed on set? How do we ensure proper and consistent reproduction all the way to the home viewers or movie audiences?

What is RAW and how do we translate the linear characteristics of this acquisition and its extended dynamic tonal range throughout the editing and postproduction processes that have adopted logarithmic models widely used in film and DI.

Furthermore, traditional 3-chip camera manufacturers (ex. : Sony F-23, Viper, Panasonic HPX-3700, etc.) have also gone beyond the boundaries of BT-709 by offering extended gammas (Sony Log, Filmstream, ARRI Log F, Log C, etc.) that provide many advantages to filmmakers.

Image coding (BT.709, SMPTE/DCI P3 RGB, XYZ), various types of compression schemes (HDCAM SR, ProRes 422 , JPEG 2000, r3d ) and bit depth (8, 10, 12, 14, 16 bits) are additional technical factors that filmmakers need to take into consideration during the creative process.  How do those affect image quality and the reliability of color reproduction?

A proper understanding of the various forms of LUTS (1D, 3D) used throughout the workflow is indispensible. Mr Poynton will « de-mystify » and explain how these new tools can play a significant role in achieving reliable color reproduction in Motion Imaging today.
